4 Daily Practices That Create Amazing Emotional Health

In our fast-paced lives, punctuated by external pressures and internal battles, emotional health often takes a backseat. Yet, our emotional state often acts as the foundation upon which our overall well-being is built! The harmony we seek is not in grand gestures, but in the daily habits and practices we cultivate.

These daily habits, as simple as they may seem, become the steadfast pillars that uphold our emotional health. They pave the way for resilience, optimism, and inner peace.

This article delves into the myriad of ways these practices influence our emotional health, offering a deep understanding of their power and ways to integrate them into our routines. Whether you’re facing life’s routine ebbs and flows or navigating its tumultuous waves, these practices serve as an anchor, grounding us and enhancing our emotional well-being. Dive in, and discover the transformative potential of these small (but powerful) everyday routines!

Embracing Life’s Dynamic Nature

Life is a tapestry of constant shifts and turns. Each sunrise greets us with a mix of familiar patterns and unforeseen moments, making every day distinct from the last. It’s essential to recognize and internalize the fact that change is the only constant in life. As such, developing a robust emotional foundation often starts with accepting life’s dynamic nature. This isn’t about passive acceptance but actively understanding that life’s beauty often lies in its unpredictability and embracing it wholeheartedly.

To thrive amidst these ever-evolving circumstances, consider the following steps:

Awareness: Begin by observing and acknowledging the shifts around you, whether they’re in your personal, professional, or emotional realms. Understand that no two days are the same, and that’s perfectly alright.

Flexibility: Train your mind to be adaptable. Instead of resisting change, learn to flow with it. This could mean adjusting your plans, re-evaluating your priorities, or simply taking a moment to breathe and recalibrate.

Seek Support: No one navigates life’s changes alone. Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, or professionals who can offer perspective, share experiences, or simply lend a listening ear.

In the dance of life, change often leads the way. By learning its steps and rhythm, we can not only keep pace, but also find joy in the journey! Embracing the world’s dynamic nature doesn’t mean abandoning control, but rather understanding that sometimes, the most empowering thing we can do is choose how we respond to the changes before us. Remember, acceptance in this realm translates to strength, clarity, and the grace to move forward, no matter what lies ahead.

Harnessing Positivity To Build Resilience

In the intricate fabric of life, challenges and setbacks are as inevitable as triumphs and joys. While these hurdles can sometimes overshadow our days, they often come bearing hidden gifts! The secret lies in our perception. By shifting our focus from the overwhelming negatives to the subtle positives, we begin to unveil the valuable lessons and opportunities nested within our adversities. This perspective not only helps to soften the blow of tough times, but also propels us forward with renewed vigor and optimism.

To cultivate an outlook that consistently seeks silver linings, consider adopting the following practices:

Reframe Situations: Instead of asking “Why is this happening to me?”, inquire “What can I learn from this?” or “How can this experience enrich my life?”

Maintain A Gratitude Journal: Daily jot down a few things you’re thankful for, even if they seem minor. Over time, you’ll notice an increased sensitivity to the positive aspects of life, even during hardships.

Surround Yourself With Positivity: Engage with optimistic individuals, consume uplifting media, and participate in activities that rejuvenate your spirit. Sometimes, external influences can significantly help shift internal perspectives.

Letting Go Of The Past

The tapestry of life is colored with myriad experiences, some joyous and others painful. While memories of happiness serve as cherished keepsakes, being anchored to past regrets, mistakes, or traumas can hinder our journey towards emotional health. Holding onto past pain can cloud our present and obstruct the pathway to a promising future. By releasing these emotional burdens, we free ourselves to fully embrace the present moment, foster growth, and pave the way for healing and renewed happiness.

To incorporate the practice of releasing the past into your daily life, consider these steps:

Reflect & Accept: Set aside some quiet time daily to introspect on past events. Recognize the emotions they stir up without judgment and accept them. Understanding is the first step to healing.

Journal Your Feelings: Again, penning down your emotions acts as a cathartic release. Over time, this can help you disentangle from the tight grip of past hurts.

Forgive: This might be the hardest step but it’s the most liberating. Forgiveness isn’t about the other person; it’s about freeing your soul from the chains of resentment and anger.

Releasing the past isn’t about negating or forgetting it; it’s about making peace with it. By consciously choosing to let go each day, we not only fortify our emotional health but also rediscover the beauty of now. With a heart unburdened by yesterday’s sorrows, we are better equipped to create tomorrow’s joys. Embracing the present with an open heart allows us to design a future filled with hope, resilience, and emotional harmony.

Planning Ahead With Flexibility – A Key Strategy For Emotional Health

Navigating the complexities of emotional health can seem daunting, but one effective strategy is planning ahead while maintaining flexibility. This approach allows you to manage stress and stay resilient amidst life’s challenges.

Here are some steps that network marketers or anyone seeking good emotional health can take toward this end:

1. Set Clear Yet Flexible Goals

The first step in your journey toward improved mental wellness involves setting clear yet flexible goals. But how do you strike a balance between having direction and allowing room for change?

Prioritize SMART goal-setting techniques, which promote specificity without compromising adaptability. Remember, it’s okay if these goals evolve over time – after all, embracing changes is part of leading an emotionally healthy lifestyle.

2. Create Contingency Plans

To further enhance your ability to navigate unexpected events in everyday life, consider creating contingency plans where possible. Emotionally healthy individuals:

  1. Analyze potential scenarios during the execution phase of your plan.
  2. Determine proactive responses for each case scenario.
  3. This not only prepares you mentally but also reduces anxiety by boosting confidence in handling whatever comes up.

3. Practice Self-Compassion Throughout Your Journey

Another key aspect entails practicing self-compassion throughout this process.

Remember, everyone makes mistakes along their journey. It’s important not just to take care but to forgive yourself when things don’t go according to plan so as not to let negative feelings overshadow positive emotions from achievements made thus far.

Finally, remember to always leave space within your schedule for unforeseen circumstances. Events might arise unexpectedly, requiring immediate attention. Having some buffer time ensures that it won’t derail your overall progress completely, instead providing an opportunity to reassess and adjust accordingly, maintaining a balanced outlook.

Conclusion

The journey to emotional health is an ongoing process, deeply intertwined with our daily routines and practices. By prioritizing physical activity, embracing positivity, fostering strong relationships, and navigating life’s changes with grace, we can significantly enhance our emotional well-being.

Incorporating these principles into our everyday lives not only provides immediate benefits but also sets the foundation for long-term emotional resilience. Remember, it’s the consistent steps we take each day that compound over time, leading to a more balanced, happier, and emotionally healthier life.

Embrace the power of daily practices, and watch your emotional health flourish.

Stay Energized This Fall

It’s the time of year that most parents probably look forward to and dread simultaneously. On one hand, your kids will be out of the house more often, less bored and on a more consistent schedule now that school has started. On the other hand, this also means YOU have a new schedule, too!

It starts weeks in advance. The mad dash to get everyone and everything ready, from running around picking up supplies, shopping for clothes, to getting doctor physicals and lastly, haircuts. But it’s not over… not by a long shot. That’s because when the actual school year begins, it adds a whole new level of busy to your already full schedule, which can take a toll on the entire family.

The Fall Season is Beautiful…But Extremely Busy

The following expanded schedule of events should look familiar to most parents:

While we know you are super parents, this type of busy schedule takes a toll and is very challenging to continue for the long haul. Most will start removing some of the to-dos, like personal exercise and even after-school sports or dance for the kids. This is unfortunate because physical activity plays an essential role in both the mental and physical health of the entire family.

The Health Benefits of Staying Active
It is important to stay active to maintain and promote good health, especially when we are super busy and stressed! The same goes for kids. There are so many health benefits to physical activity for promoting continued growth.

DID YOU KNOW: Less than one-quarter (24%) of children 6 to 17 years of age participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. 2

Healthy Eating for an Active Lifestyle

To fuel your body properly with energy needed to stay in motion, there are a few essentials you need.3

  3. Power up with Protein—Protein is essential for building and repairing muscle.
  4. Mix It Up with Plant Protein Foods—Variety is key. Be sure to mix in some beans and peas to your favorite dishes.
  5. Vary Your Fruits and Vegetables—Get the nutrients you need by eating a variety of colored fruits and vegetables, i.e., red and black berries, red and yellow peppers and dark greens.
  6. Don’t Forget the Dairy—Dairy is needed to help maintain strong bones for everyday activities.
  7. Balance Your Meals—Include the four food groups each day.
  8. Drink Water—Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times to make it easy to stay hydrated.
  9. Know How Much to Eat—Plan a diet that is right for you and track your progress.

Are You Protecting Your Skin Like You Should This Summer?

Sun is synonymous with warmth, a cold drink on the beach and summer fun. But there is growing evidence that too much sun exposure can have a detrimental effect on your skin.

According to a recent AAD survey, most Americans say they have gotten a sunburn that impacted their day-to-day life.1 Of those who have been sunburned, 60% said their sunburns made their clothes uncomfortable, 43% said they couldn’t sleep, and 21% said they were embarrassed about their sunburns. Dermatologists the world over tell their patients unprotected exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays is a major risk factor to their health.

This is why your mom chased you around the pool with sunscreen trying to keep you covered from head to toe!

While there are many health benefits of sun exposure, there are also negative effects on healthy aging. While being proactive and using sun protection is always the best option, you should also keep in mind other proactive steps in helping promote healthy aging and in reducing the visible signs of aging after sun exposure.

What happens to our skin as we age can be grouped into two areas: natural aging and premature aging.

 The NATURAL Aging of Skin
Our skin structure is made of both collagen and elastin. Collagen provides the strength and support while elastin provides the flexibility and elastic ability to bounce back when smooshed or stretched out of place.

As we age, this structure weakens, and skin begins sag. Other unavoidable forces contribute to aging skin as well, including the following:

  • Skin becomes thinner—With age, our skin thins and loses fat. The plump smoothness of our skin as children is replaced by a rougher texture.
  • Gravity relentlessly tugs on weakened skin—This creates droopy jowls and “chicken fat” under the arms.
  • Our genetic code contributes invisibly to the process—This leads the skin for those in their 50s to look much older than their age.

PREMATURE Aging of Skin
Thankfully, most of the skin changes associated with aging are avoidable, and most of them are due to one cause: sun damage. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate the skin, making it important to apply sunscreen on all areas not covered by clothing whenever spending time outdoors.1

Ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate the inner lays of the skin where they damage the elastic fibers that keep skin firm, allowing wrinkles to develop. The amount of wrinkles that develop, and how prominent they are, is largely dependent on a person’s lifetime sun exposure.

Steps to Take to Protect from Further Sun Damage
While we can’t go back and put sunscreen on our carefree 10-year-old selves, we can protect our skin from sun damage now. Here are some steps we can take:

  • Stop intentionally sunbathing
  • Always wear sunscreen
  • Choose a product with sun protection factor (SPF) 15 or greater
  • The hands and face are the most frequently exposed—cover them
  • Wear a hat with a brim
  • Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when its rays are the strongest

FAST FACT
While about 70.8% of U.S. adults use at least one form of sun protection (shade, sunscreen, or protective clothing), even with perfect sunscreen use, wrinkles can’t be prevented completely. Some wrinkling is hereditary, and a certain number of wrinkles are natural to aging.3

HEALTHY AGING:

Although we are living longer, the question really is, are we living healthier lives as we age into our golden years?

There is no question that we are living longer than at any other time in history. In a century, the world changed from having almost no countries with life expectancy more than 50 years to having many countries with a life expectancy of 80 years. In the United States, for example, life expectancy at birth over the 110 years from 1900 to 2010 went from 47.3 to 78.7.1 By 2050, one-in-five U.S. residents are expected to be 65 or older.2

Although we are living longer, the question really is, are we living healthier lives as we age into our golden years? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy aging as “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age.” Essentially, it boils down to having the health capacity—both physically and mentally—to do the things we want to do as we get older.

The key to enjoying our golden years requires maintaining healthy behaviors as we age. Both strength training to maintain muscle mass and good nutrition and refraining from tobacco use can help to maintain healthy cognitive function, delay care dependency, and reverse frailty.

How Aging Affects the Endocrine System

The endocrine system includes glands and organs throughout the body, which all play a vital role in controlling and regulating many of the body’s functions, including metabolism, growth and development, sexual function and reproduction, heart rate, blood pressure, appetite, sleeping and waking cycles, and body temperature.3

As we age, changes naturally occur in the way our systems are controlled. Secretion patterns change. The way receiving organs process the hormones can change and the blood levels in some hormones increase while others decrease. The rate at which hormones are metabolized can slow. Countless changes, whether major or minor, have an effect on how healthy we age.

One study showed 43% of women surveyed say hormones have negatively affected their overall well-being.4  Women may also experience imbalances in estrogen and progesterone levels, while men are more likely to experience imbalances in testosterone levels.5

DIGESTIVE HEALTH SERIES: COURSE #4

GI-BIOME 401

How the GI-Biome System™ works together in supporting optimal digestive and immune system health.*

In the first three courses of the Digestive Health Series, we first identified the obstacles in your life affecting your microbiome, such as stress, overindulging with food and loss of sleep. Next, we analyzed how these obstacles take a toll on your body. In the last course we shared some valuable tips on how to create sustainable, healthier habits to promote wellness.

In this, the final course—GI-BIOME 401—we will explore how each of the GI-Biome System™ products can help improve health and how the system works together in supporting optimal digestive and immune system health.*

Chapter 7: Your Health Depends on the Health of Your Microbiome

You’ve probably heard the phrase “you are what you eat” before, and this could not be any more accurate. Everything that we digest, or don’t digest, has an impact on both our mental and physical health, especially on the vast and complex network of more than 100 trillion microorganisms known as our microbiome that we introduced in previous courses.

Everyone’s microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint and is exposed to and altered by everything we encounter. The reality is challenges to our microbiome are everywhere, pesticides, antibiotics and antibacterial soaps, poor nutrition and stress, to name a few. The reality is your health depends on the health of your microbiome.

Chapter 8: The Answer to Gut Health? The GI-Biome System.

Understanding the negative compounding effect that daily life challenges and environmental factors have on the health of our microbiome, lead Mannatech to develop the GI-Biome System. This system contains three products: GI-Defense®, GI-ProBalance® and GI-Zyme®.

These three products work together to help support a positive chain reaction effect on your gut health and ultimately your microbiome.* GI-Defense helps to strengthen the gut barrier, creating a more stable environment to support growth and resilience of the healthy bacteria found in GI-ProBalance and digestive enzymes found in GI-Zyme.*

Step 1 – Strengthen Your Gut Barrier with GI-Defense*

GI-Defense is the first line of support for your microbiome.* It helps strengthen your gut barrier while supporting your body’s natural ability to replenish butyrate, a short chain fatty acid, which is crucial and helping to soothe nourish and strengthen the gut lining.*

Our GlycoBiome and Butyrate Support Blend found exclusively in GI-Defense contains natural yet scientifically studied ingredients that support your body’s natural ability to produce its own arsenal of beneficial butyrate to help maintain the gut lining and ultimately help support your microbiome.*

In fact, in a 12-week randomized parallel double-blind, placebo-controlled study, it was shown that the ingredients in GI-Defense can significantly increase the presence of short chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, by creating an ideal environment for the microbes in your body to flourish.*

GI-Defense capsules are formulated to:

  • Help strengthen and support gut barrier function and integrity.*
  • Support healthy functioning of the digestive and immune systems.*
  • Support healthy intestinal permeability and environment.*
  • Help purify the gut and balance beneficial bacteria.*
  • Support short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, especially butyrate production.*
  • Help comfort feelings of gas and bloating.*

Step 2 – Build Balance for Your Gut Bacteria with GI-ProBalance*

Bacteria helps protect the cells in your intestines from invading pathogens and also promotes repair of damaged tissue. Most importantly, by having good bacteria in your body, bad bacteria doesn’t get a chance to grow.

GI-ProBalance slimsticks are specially formulated with a blend of eight powerful strains of probiotics. These strains were specifically selected to survive all stages of digestion, as well as rich prebiotic fibers to support the natural balance of good bacteria for your microbiome.*

GI-ProBalance slimsticks are formulated to:

  • Support a natural balance of good bacteria to maintain healthy digestion.*
  • Help support the body against occasional intestinal disturbances and typical, occasional digestive upsets.*
  • Promote natural immune function.*
  • Supplement natural probiotic levels that might fluctuate due to normal aging, diet or other normal digestive issues.*
  • Contain acid-resistant probiotic strains.

Step 3 – Optimize Support for Digestion with GI-Zyme*

Digestive enzymes, which are produced naturally through the digestive tract, play a key role in nutrition absorption. While we may not give them any thought, these tiny molecules facilitate the breaking down and absorption of food. This enables us to gain nutrients from foods that may otherwise be difficult to digest.

Unlike most enzyme supplements, GI-Zyme capsules offer a blend of natural botanical ingredients and eight broad spectrum digestive enzymes at a wide range of pH levels, designed to break down many types of food throughout the different stages of digestion.*

GI-Zyme capsules are formulated to:

  • Formulated to help improve digestion.*
  • May help ensure that the maximum level of nutrient absorption is attained.*
  • Formulated to support digestive absorption.*
  • Formulated to assist in breaking down proteins, fats and carbohydrates.*
  • Supports a healthy microbiome.*

GI-Biome System Supports all Stages of Your Digestion*

When all 3 products are taken together, the GI-Biome System paves the way for digestive health and microbiome support for many other systems throughout your body and greater overall wellness.*

Order the GI-Biome System and start improving your microbiome today!*

DIGESTIVE HEALTH SERIES: COURSE #3

HEALTH & WELLNESS 301

How to create healthier lifestyle habits you can stick to for a lifetime.

In the last course we studied the effects of gut health and how it affects other key systems within our body. In this course we will come up with a game plan in addressing effective and tested ways to help you create healthier lifestyle habits for a lifetime.

We have all tried to set healthy goals and failed more than once. We tend to get really excited about the big adjustments we’re going to make in our lives, like setting a goal to drink more water or go out for a walk every day. For a few days we are fully committed and firing on all cylinders. Then we end up missing two days in a row and before long we have quit trying.

Chapter 5: Healthy Habits Start with the Right Mindset

What is lacking is mindset. What you believe dictates what actions you take as well as the eventual results you will have.

Here are five mindset building blocks to help you create lasting healthy habits:

  1. Know Your Habits – Every time you do something—such as brushing your teeth or driving home from work—your brain creates a pathway associated with a particular behavior. The more you repeat that behavior the easier it becomes. This pathway is called a habit loop. “The first step to changing your behavior is to create an awareness around what you do regularly,” explains Dr. Lisa Marsch, an expert in behavior change at Dartmouth College. “Look for patterns in your behavior and what triggers the unhealthy habits you want to change.”
  2. Make a Plan That Gives You Small Wins – The key to any good plan is establishing goals and actions that lead to easy wins in the beginning. Maybe it’s taking a different way home from work to avoid the fast food chains you frequent the most, or removing all junk food from the pantry and stocking it with healthier options. These small wins will turn into habits, giving you more confidence to move forward with more ambitious goals.
  3. Remember Your “Why” to Stay on Track – Part of your plan should be writing down why you want to get healthy in the first place, and prominently displaying it where you will see it daily. It will be your daily motivation to help keep you on track when you are tempted to stray off course. Keeping a daily journal of your thoughts and progress is also a helpful resource in practicing self control and staying on track.
  4. Imagine Your Healthiest Self – Another way to keep you focused is to imagine a future version of yourself at your most healthy. By pondering and imagining a healthier version of oneself is a powerful motivator because you get a glimpse of the results you are striving for: a healthy body, inside and out.
  5. Be Patient & Consistent – Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, either will adopting the habits that will lead to a healthy lifestyle. You will have ups and downs—learn from them and move on. With consistent effort in all of these areas mentioned above, you will start to see the progress you desire. With progress comes the inspiration and fortitude to keep going.

Chapter 6: Healthy Lifestyle Choices Takes Practice

As we talked in the last chapter, before you can take the action to live healthy you need a positive mindset in place. Your mindset guides your actions which give you your habits. Without good habits, it’s easy to live by default. To get the healthy lifestyle you want takes more than just running on autopilot. It means thinking intentionally about every choice you make.

Making as little as one change per day can have a huge effect on your overall quality of life. In fact, the key is to take a simple, realistic approach towards living a healthy lifestyle that feels achievable each day.

Here are the core actions we need to practice each day:

  1. Lower Stress Levels with Self Care – It’s no secret—stress knows how to hold onto us tightly, it creeps up on us creating a wake of chaos on our physical health. Practicing self care can go a long way in lowering your stress levels, such as getting a massage, taking a walk, or taking a yoga class. The key is taking time to give back to yourself.
  2. Get the Right Amount of Sleep – Sleep is one of the most important factors when it comes to your health. For some, getting a good night’s sleep may be a challenge, but if you follow the right steps and create a sleep schedule, you will be well on your way to having a good night’s rest.
  3. Eat a Nutrient Dense Diet – The reason why people crave sugar and unhealthy foods is because your body is starving from lack of nutrients. By eating a nutrient, plant-based diet you are giving your body what it needs, and you will have more energy, sleep better, look and feel better.
  4. Eat Foods High in Probiotics & Prebiotics – Both support the body in building and maintaining a healthy colony of bacteria and other microorganisms, which support gut health and aid in digestion. Prebiotic fiber can be found in apples, bananas and flaxseed. Fermented foods such as yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha help promote beneficial bacteria by creating an environment where microorganisms can flourish.
  5. Stay Hydrated – Your body is composed of 60% water to help with digestion, circulation, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature, just to name a few functions. There are many different opinions on just how much water you should be drinking every day, but most health experts commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon a day.
  6. Get Out and Exercise – Make it a point to move every day. You don’t have to hit the gym, take a hike, play tennis with a friend, go for a swim, hop on a bike or stream an online workout. Exercise is an essential part of any healthy lifestyle. It improves the overall condition of the body and helps you perform better in your daily life.

DIGESTIVE HEALTH SERIES: ANATOMY 201

Poor gut health can create a chain reaction affecting other key systems within our body.

In the first course we learned that we all are bombarded by daily stresses, but how we deal with these situations is of prime importance to our mental and physical health. We learned that some stress is good, but prolonged stress (chronic) is where it can be detrimental to our health.

In this course we will study how the data shared in STATISTICS 101 affects gut health, as well as how gut health creates a chain reaction affecting other key systems within our body.

Chapter 3: Unhealthy Food + Lack of Sleep + Life Stress = Poor Gut Health

Your body’s ability to stay healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally actually begins in your gut. When you combine high caloric junk food, inconsistent sleep patterns, and little to no exercise, with massive amounts of stress we encounter daily, you have the perfect storm to negatively affect the wellness of your microbiome and overall gut health.

A healthy balance of Bacteria
Your microbiome’s ecosystem is as diverse as the Amazon rainforest. Your health depends on the life and vibrancy of this vast and complex network of more than 100 trillion microorganisms that live in and on our bodies. These microbes include bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses.

Unseen by the naked eye, these microbes work continuously to form your innate and adaptive immune system, break down your food for digestion and even influence how much you weigh. Bacteria is especially vital to these processes. While some bacteria are harmful, we also have beneficial bacteria to help keep the bad bacteria in balance.

Importance of Tight Junctions in Intestinal Wall
Inside our bellies, our extensive intestinal lining covers more than 4,000 square feet of surface area. A primary function of our intestinal wall includes acting as a barrier to control what enters our blood stream. Small gaps in the intestinal wall, “tight junctions,” allow water and beneficial nutrients to enter while blocking out harmful substances. These junctions must stay tight to ensure proper health.

Chapter 4: The Chain Reaction that Poor Gut Has on Other Systems

When working properly, your gastrointestinal digestive tract (GI) is a thing of beauty. It breaks down food, absorbs nutrients and protects your body from harmful substances while efficiently eliminating waste. But when your digestive tract is disrupted, it can throw off many systems throughout your whole body, things you would never image are connected. When you consider that 70% of our immune system lives within our digestive tract, you can begin understanding how valuable it is to keep our GI tract healthy and working properly.

The Gut-Brain Axis Superhighway
Our brain and gut are connected by a bi-directional network of neurotransmitters called the gut-brain axis. They talk with one another, carrying vital information back and forth via the vagus nerve. This connection provides feedback about how we think, feel and behave. Many of these neurotransmitters are produced by your gut cells and the trillions of microbes living there.

You may recall from the first course; today’s modern lifestyle can take a toll on the beneficial bacteria in your gut microbiome and can cause a chain reaction of health issues throughout the body. This may lead to a weakened immune system, poor mood and contribute to normal digestive issues, including a condition called “leaky gut”—all of which can affect your overall health.

What is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut can be explained much like how a fisherman’s net is supposed to work. If the net is not properly maintained, excessive gaps and holes could occur that allow the fish to go through the net and not get caught, which defeats the purpose of having a net.

This same principle applies to your gut lining if it is not properly supported and maintained; your gut could also develop widened junctions. These gaps allow harmful things to exit the gut and enter your bloodstream. This can cause digestive issues, weakened immune system, poor mood and more.

STATISTICS 101 — The Toll Life Events Take On Our Microbiome Health

April_GIBiome_campaign-032321-Course1BP

In this blog post, we will assess the toll that certain decisions and events, like overindulging, stress, sleep loss and holidays, take on our microbiome health. We will evaluate statistical data to support how widespread the concern is.

Chapter 1: How Life Events Impacts Our Health

In today’s fast-paced society, stress is a daily part of life. Just think about it — how stressful is your commute to work? According to the U.S Census Bureau, it now takes the average worker 26 minutes to travel to work. That’s the longest it’s been since the Census began tracking this data in 1980. Half the time you’re running late, there is traffic and you just hit two red lights…in a row! Your day can become stressful in an instant.

Even annual events like the winter holiday season that most people look forward to only compounds the amount of stress you already are experiencing. For example, according to NBC News1 45% of Americans would prefer to skip Christmas due to the “extreme stress” the holiday season brings, like the lack of time and money, as well as the pressure to give or get gifts.

While we may want to push our difficulties aside or pretend they don’t exist, how we deal with these situations is of prime importance to our mental and physical health.

Short-Term Stress vs Prolonged (Chronic) Stress

Research has shown that the stress response is an essential survival mechanism, which for most situations in life can be a good thing3. It helps to increase our reaction time, concentration and alertness and prepares the body for “flight or fight.”

When the stress response becomes prolonged (chronic) like when losing a job or a family member, our attention, memory, and the way we deal with emotions can be negatively impacted. This long-term stress can contribute to both physical and mental illness through effects on the heart and brain.

Top 10 Stressors:

  1. Having enough in emergency savings – 41%
  2. Job security – 39%
  3. Income fluctuations – 29%
  4. Paying utilities – 28%
  5. Paying rent or mortgage – 28%
  6. Financial market volatility – 25%
  7. Paying down/off credit card debt – 23%
  8. Having enough saved for retirement – 23%
  9. Paying health care bills – 19%
  10. Putting off major financial decisions – 17%

2The survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll, on behalf of NEFE, from April 7-9, 2020, among more than 2,000 U.S. adults.

Chapter 2: How Stress Leads to Poor Health Choices

During stressful times we fall into destructive habits.  We make poor choices, sometimes unconsciously or without reason just to take our minds off of our stressful situations. We all know that our diet can impact our health, but few people know just how profoundly it interacts with the beneficial bacteria housed in our gut.

Fast Food Lifestyle Wreaking Havoc

Everyone’s microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint and is altered by everything we encounter. Overindulging in unhealthy foods can have a significant impact on your health and your microbiome. When you’re pressed for time, home cooked meals are usually the first casualty.

In fact, according to the CDC, over one-third of adults (36.3%) consume fast food on a given day. This reliance on getting quick, easy, and high caloric food is a main reason why over 73% of adults 20 and over are overweight4. In addition to expanding our waistlines, fast food has a significant toll on our gut microbes and your immune system. Diets high in fat and calories can contribute to obesity due to an altered gut microbiota.

The Connection of Stress to Lack of Sleep

Stress and anxiety often lead to insomnia and sleep problems. By the same token, lack of proper rest can contribute to stress. In fact, 35.2% of all adults in U.S. 18+ years old, don’t get the needed 7 or more hours a sleep per night5.

2020 just made it a little worse. It was a tough year with many experiencing sleepless nights wondering if they were going to have a job to pay their bills. With unemployment rates at their worst since the Great Depression, it’s not surprising that 48% of U.S. adults report losing sleep, at least occasionally, about a money issue6.

Top it off with reduced or no exercise, and little self-care time for relaxing, you have the perfect storm to affect the wellness of your microbiome.

Are there really any Benefits to taking a Multivitamin?

It is important to note that when taking a multivitamin, that you don’t settle for just any multivitamin. Why is that?

Why You Need a Multivitamin

Even if you eat only unprocessed organic foods, you will still not get all the nutrients you need. I urge you to take a multivitamin and mineral supplement for the following reasons:

  • The foods you eat are stripped of nutrients through refining and processing.
  • The foods you eat are laden with fats, sugars, and salts, and devoid of other essential nutrients that strip your body of nutrients to digest them.
  • A USDA government survey of 21,500 people found that not one single person consumed 100% of the U.S. RDA (recommended daily allowance) from the foods they ate.
  • Due to the time it takes fresh foods to get from the farm to your table, 57% or more of the nutritional value can be lost.
  • Soils, even at organic farms, become depleted of vitamins and minerals after years of cultivation.
  • Soils are much more depleted than they were even 30 years ago as pesticide use and chemical fertilizers, contributing to soil depletion, have increased in use over the years.

What if YOU could have access to these 12 benefits in a multivitamin?

• Provides antioxidant (vitamins A, C and E) support*
• Supports endocrine health*
• Supports mood, the mind and the body’s feeling of normalcy*
• Supports a healthy immune system*
• Supports the liver, kidneys and nervous system*
• Supports healthy skin, hair, eyes and joints*
• Supports healthy bones*
